Weekend Trips
A central part of the Study Abroad Adventure in Argentina are the 3 weekend trips to Bariloche, Iguazu falls, and Montevideo. All transportation, accommodation, and tours for these trips is included. Optional activities such as skiing, rafting, repelling, and mountain treks will involve extra charges.
Bariloche July 16-19
Just mention Bariloche to an Argentine, and you’ll inspire a whimsical sigh. Officially known as San Carlos de Bariloche, this city represents the good life in the national consciousness. With stunning natural scenery and fine cuisine, it’s a winter and summer playground for vacationing Argentines, and it’s practically a right of passage for Argentine youth to explore nature in the Nahuel Huapi National Park here, with Bariloche in the middle. Bariloche is blessed with a strategic geographic position. With the rugged plains of the Patagonian Steppe to the east, the towering snowy peaks of the Andes to the west, and the glistening and grande Nahuel Huapi Lake in front, opportunities for adventure are abundant.
While in Bariloche, you’ll have the opportunity to ski the most famous ski resort in South America(clothes and equipment can be rented at very reasonable rates so no reason to bring your own), tour the town’s beautiful and historic architecture, experience the renowned nightlife, take a guided mountain hike, and see the lake district via boat. Make sure your camera has plenty of memory because this region of Patagonia has an infinite number of breathtaking views.
Iguazu Falls July 10- 11
Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horsehoe shape over nearly two miles of the Iguazu River, Iguazú Falls are the result of a volcanic eruption which left a large crack in the earth. The falls are part of a singular practically virgin jungle ecosystem protected by Argentine and Brazilian national parks on either side of the cascades. Two thirds of the falls are on the Argentinian side of the river where you can also tour Iguazú National Park where there are jungle trails and bird hikes.
While in Puerto Iquazu our group will all take part in guided tours of the falls both on foot and by boat, and you’ll have the opportunity to take part in an additional 1 or more activities of your choosing which may include rafting on the Iguassu River, rapeling 160 feet alongside the falls, a canopy tour which includes a climbing wall in the middle of the subtropical humid forest or visiting a bird park.
Montevideo July 23-24
Uruguay’s capital and by far its largest city, Montevideo is a vibrant, eclectic place with a rich cultural life. Stretching nearly 20km from east to west, the city wears many faces, from its industrial port to the exclusive residential suburb of Carrasco near the airport. In the historic downtown business district, art deco and neoclassical buildings jostle for space alongside grimy, worn-out sky scrapers that appear airlifted from Havana or Ceauşescu’s Romania, while across town the shopping malls and modern high-rises of beach communities like Punta Carretas and Pocitos bear more resemblance to Miami or Copacabana.
We will travel to Montevideo by ferry from Buenos Aires and whilst there we will take part in a guided city tour. You’ll also have the opportunity to spend some free time in the city and enjoy an organized night on the town before returning to Buenos Aires the next day.
